What can chiropractic help with?

Chiropractic has provided effective relief to millions of individuals suffering from back and neck ailments. Chiropractic has also provided relief from many other musculoskeletal complaints ranging from knee and ankle problems to carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow. In fact, if you suffer any musculoskeletal pain or discomfort in any area of the spine or extremity, you are a candidate for safe, natural, non-invasive chiropractic care. If a condition exists which is better suited for treatment by a medical specialist, chiropractors are fully trained to identify such conditions and make the appropriate referral. However, most patients suffering from musculoskeletal complaints can and are successfully treated with chiropractic every single day. Common musculoskeletal conditions treated:

> Low back pain and stiffness
> Neck and upper back pain and stiffness

Will the treatment hurt?
Chiropractic treatment is usually pain-free, unless an area is inflamed. Our treatments will be modified to correspond with every patient's needs, to ensure the most practical and comfortable experience.

After the first treatment the patient may feel stiff or tired, but this is a natural response to spinal manipulation. We have noticed through the years that each client's response to treatment will be different.

How often will I need treatment?
When should I be checked? Chiropractic aims to reduce pain and improve mobility, strengthen and stabilise the injured areas, and maintain long term correction. The number of treatments required depends entirely on the individual condition and is based on how long the problem has been there and the severity of the injury. Treatment tends to be more intensive initially in order to re-train the joints and muscles to work correctly. Most people will see an improvement in their symptoms within 1-2 weeks, after which they will be seen by the chiropractor less frequently as they continue to improve. Once a problem has been fully corrected many of our patients choose to attend our practice for maintenance care check ups from time to time to ensure long term correction is maintained.

Should you have chiropractic care during your pregnancy?
Chiropractic care can help you and your baby achieve a healthier pregnancy and delivery. It is gentle and safe.

In studies conducted by Irvin Hendryson, M.D., a member of the American Medical Association board of trustees, it was shown that women who received chiropractic adjustments in their third trimester of pregnancy were able to carry and deliver children with more comfort. Also, well-known orthopedist Per Freitag, M.D., conducted a hospital study that incorporated chiropractic adjustments during the patient's pregnancy. He found that the need for pain killers during delivery was reduced by half.

During pregnancy many physiological and endocrinological changes take place, all for the purpose of creating an optimal environment for the developing baby. This complex process involves every system of the pregnant woman's body.

The musculoskeletal systems are affected by the protruding abdomen, duck-like walk, and increased lower back curve. The pelvis changes early in pregnancy due to the release of estrogen and/or relaxin. These hormones cause the ligaments to relax and soften, which together with increased synovial fluid widens the pelvic joint.

This increased mobility is not restricted to the pelvis only, but may be noticed in other joints and muscles as well. Often this relaxation or softening of the pelvic ligament can contribute to pelvic instability which is the most common cause of lower back pain in pregnant women. Special styles of gentle adjustments are used to safely guide the pelvis and spine into its normal state of balance.

Is chiropractic appropriate for children?
Chiropractic care is appropriate for children of all ages. After a careful assessment, if the chiropractor feels there may be benefit for your child, specialist and extremely gentle paediatric techniques are used to help restore full movement to your child's spine, joints and muscles.

What about a good diet and exercise?
A balanced diet and regular exercise will certainly help your condition, but will not necessarily deal with an existing problem in the same way as chiropractic method. While exercise will increase your fitness and core strength, chiropractic can pinpoint problem areas that are reducing your body's efficiency and flexibility.
